No, it is not a typo. Our word "worship" is derived from the old English word, "worthship". This shows us that true worship must be given to someone who merits worship, who is worthy of our worship. This is why graven images and idols are so abhorred by God. This is why all religions are not equal. The value is derived from the worth of the person, or object, being worshiped.

What is worship?

Worship: The act of giving recognition, respect, and high honor to a person or an object of esteem.

True worship can not be forced upon a person but must come from a heart that is in submission and willingly in service to God.

Psalm 95:6 O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.

Why worship?

Worship is commanded in the Bible. This alone is reason enough. If He has commanded , we must obey. It is a commandment from God and failing to do so is sin and shows a lack of love towards Him.

Deuteronomy 28:1-2
And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God.

Luke 4:8
If ye love me, keep my commandments.

The Old Testament is replete with illustrations of the times the nation of Israel obeyed and worshiped God diligently and were then blessed. And at other times, the Israelites turned their worship towards foreign gods and were judged. Only God is worthy of worship.

Who do we worship?

Psalm 48:1
Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.

God alone is worthy of our worship. You must know Him in order to worship Him. You must know what He is like and you must know what He has done.

God is:

and much more!

God's works:

Created the universe
Created man in His image
Delivered his people from the bondage of Egypt
Died on the cross for all man kind through His son, Jesus Christ
Gives strength
and much more!

Once you understand the greatness of God and His mighty works, you can give him true worship through, recognition, respect, and honor.

Psalm 107:8 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

Dear Father,

Clean my heart of all evil and allow me to enter into your presence, oh Lord! Permit me this day to worship you! Let me worship you through living a life that proves your worth! By your grace, may I praise and exalt you before the nations! This day I give you all honor, recognition, and the utmost respect, which is yours alone to have! I do this as a love offering given from my heart which desires none other but Thee. For Thou alone art worthy and it is but my duty and privilege to worship Thee! Amen.

first, this is a wonderful post, and timely, to remind us all of our need to glorify our Lord.

Now, to the question you asked me yesterday at the LMC, re. molars in indiginous populations: All I could find on the net was this, and it hints at differentation, that's all.

What I said after your question at the LMC, about my own experience with my wisdomteeth and a repaired molar tooth, is limited in depth.
I wish your family well, and good health!

Rita, I don't ever remember in my 70 years having seen an explaination of worship and it is ironic you have written on this very subject as I have been thinking just what worship really is. We go to Church, do our duties, Pray, Read the Bible which is all important but we must concentrate on WORSHIP. We can Worship anywhere anytime and sometimes better alone than in a crowd. Thank you sooooo much for posting these thought and truths about what we should do which is a part of our behavior.. Penless writers friend.. DON

Thanks and I am so glad you enjoyed it. By the way, the prayer request you had been praying for has been resolved. It involved our plane and the Venezuelan government. Also, friends who had been threatened by a guerrilla group if they did not leave. The friends were later deported by the Venezuelan government which leads one to believe they were all in it together.

Great post on worth-ship...will always remember this now....I find deeper levels of worship, as I continue going through the repentance process....they go hand-in-hand.

I get so weary of seeing people have "faith" for the sake of having "faith" or praying just to exercise their lungs and spew their emotions and focus on "positive" (but baseless) thoughts.

What a privilege to have faith in a God who not only CAN hear my cry, but One who loves me enough to CARE about me and who has the POWER to act on my behalf. Truly He IS worthy of my worship and my praise and trust!

I think that we could also add that worship transends every other human activitiy by light years. There is no other activity more glorious for the beleiver. Our very breath shows forth worship and we can worship when involved in any activity. This is what we will be doing for all eternity and this is what we have been designed to do. Sin must be laid aside if we are to worship God in the beauty of holiness.
