Hugo Chavez Says Venezuelan Socialism Has Begun to Reach U.S. under Obama

(CNSNews.com) -
Inspired by his meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama at the Americas Summit, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez declared on Sunday that Venezuelan socialism has begun to reach the United States under the Obama administration.

“I am coming back from Trinidad and Tobago, from the Americas Summit where, without a doubt, the position that Venezuela and its government has always defended, especially starting 10 years ago, of resistance, dignity, sovereignty and independence has obtained in Port of Spain, one of the biggest victories of our history,” Chavez said.

“It would seem that the changes that started in
Venezuela in the last decade of the 20th century have begun to reach North America,” he added.

The 'hand shake' which offended so many, was a disappointment to the Venezuelan opposition as well.

Venezuelan opposition to the Chavez administration criticized President Obama on Sunday for warming up to Chavez before demonstrating concern about Venezuela’s democracy, apporrea.org, a Venezuelan news outlet reported.

“The president’s (Chavez) authoritarianism, which grows by the day, has to be discussed,” Milos Alcalay, former Venezuelan ambassador to the U.N., who resigned in 2004 due to differences with Chavez, told aporrea.org.

The U.S. needs to talk to “the opposition, church representatives and others, who are really concerned about the democracy in Venezuela,” added Alcalay.

The US State Department acknowledges Chavez' abuses of power.

According to the U.S. State Department and other official government sources, the Venezuelan government has been guilty of numerous human rights violations under Chavez's rule.

“Politicization of the judiciary and official harassment of the political opposition and the media characterized the human rights situation during the year,” said the State Department's Country Report on Human Rights in Venezuela for 2008 that was released last month.

The report credits the Chavez regime with unlawful killings, arbitrary arrests and detention, discrimination based on political grounds, widespread corruption at all levels of government, official intimidation and attacks on the independent media.

I guess a successful dictator can see the similarities more clearly than the average American.

I suspect Obama has a sneaking (or not so sneaking) admiration for Chavez. After all, Chavez suppressed the opposition, changed the constitution to enhance his own power, and is forcing people to live according to his own dictates. That's about what Barak Hussein is doing to the best of his ability as well.

Sadly, Chavez is correct. Obama and his cohorts in Congress are destroying the United States.

On this point, I have to agree with Chavez. All the liberals here are trying to make so light of it if a conservative brings it up in conversation, "the handshake and buddy buddy" event.

What is really interesting is that a CNN poll found that Venezuela, China and Russia are all viewed more favorably than Republicans, and that a WashPost poll shows that the number of people identifying themselves as Republican is down to 21%, the lowest in almost 3 decades. It's this type of extremist rhetoric: 'Obama is a Marxist, socialist, communist', etc... that is making the GOP an ever shrinking inconsequential political entity.

Keep up the inflammatory extremist rhetoric. It'll serve to alienate more Americans and bury the GOP for good. It's a new type of McCartyism, except not many are gullible enough to buy it, except for those few holed up in a holler hoarding bullets, fearing Obama will take their guns. Not exactly the best and brightest of Americans.

Republicanism has already been marginalized to a white southern regional religious party. And btw... did you see that PEW Research study that showed that church goers are more likely to condone torture? This is an American conservative phenomenon. It shows the moral hypocrisy of conservatives and the inconsistency of their belief system. It shows that such people don't uphold American values and would condone tactics that compromise our great nation's ideals, making us resemble the very enemies we fight.

Bush destroyed the GOP as he severely hurt America. Obama has the toughest job of any incoming president in our lifetime.

ellen, I did not write any of this. It is cross posted from a news article. Chavez made the statements, not me. SO I am not sure why you are angry at me.
