Amazing. Pathetic. Maddening. Sad.

No.
I would rephrase part of the question: "because one company had an accident" to "because one company violated a number of industry-wide standards for safe operations." If BP had done things by the book, I doubt very much there would have been a blowout. On the final day, BP bypassed a number of procedures used in the oil field to determine if gas was coming into the wellbore.
Penny wise and pound foolish, cutting corners to save a few bucks. When initial production is projected to be worth millions of dollars a day, it is STUPID to try to save a few million dollars by cutting short a number of tests. People running drilling rigs follow accepted safe procedures for a very simple reason: their lives are at stake. Better to spend a little extra time and money to make sure you are safe. BP didn't do that, and paid the price.
BP billed itself as "Beyond Petroleum." In a number of ways, this was true, as it repeatedly ignored industry-wide procedures on safety. It was no accident that BP's Texas City refinery blew up.
I worked with a former BP employee. He and his chief engineer had presented numerous well-documented recommendations for repairs and maintenance, which upper managment ignored. Whne BP offered him a promotion, he decided to retire. In his view, a company that refused to repair and maintain its equipment was setting him up for a fall if he got promoted.
An entire industry which follows safe procedures should not have been penalized for the actions of a rogue company - which was also a big contributer to the Obama campaign.
What a fantastic post!!! I may have to borrow this one. The only reason he is in office is because a lot of people thought he'd give them a free ride (and he has....at others expense)
Again--Thanks Rita! (How come people don't see this?!)
