Its my blogaversary!

Five years ago today, in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, I gave birth to a blog!

I had no idea the way it would take me around the world via my readers. I never imagined I would produce something anyone who did not know me would bother reading. I have some long time readers who are now friends in the truest sense, even though we have never met face to face.

Just for fun, if you are a regular reader, tell us how you found out about Jungle Mom and how long you have been reading The Jungle Hut?

Why I blog

I like to blog for different reasons:

1) I like to learn, I need to learn something new everyday or I feel as if the day was wasted. So when my daughter Jackie called me from Paraguay nearly 5 years ago (I was living in Venezuela at the time) and said, "Mom, I have a blog." I did not like not knowing what one was. I checked her blog out. Loved it, and tried to leave a comment. Next thing I know, rather than a comment, I had  created my OWN blog! Still not sure how that happened!

2) I like to meet new people and I love a good debate. Not an argument, just sharing differences of opinion.

3) I love sharing with family and friends. Mine are spread all over the globe, literally! Through this venue we all participate in each others lives in an active way.

4) I LOVE the Lord. This should probably be first, but half of my readers would have stopped reading at that point. LOL tricked you! I want to share what God has done for me and my family even in difficulties, in hopes of blessing others going through hard times.

5) I like to share the GOOD NEWS with people that might not normally hear it. If I reach someone through this blog, just one, I would be thrilled. So many people are open if we present things in a way they can see and feel that the conviction is of God not from me.

6) I love HEARING from everyone who visits. PLEASE, leave a comment. Even if it is anonymous. Just let me know where you are from or whatever you feel comfortable with sharing. I have some LURKERS out there and I would love to know who you are and how you ended up here at my little blog.

7)I have always enjoyed journaling, this is a way for me to record history, with world and family events to remember later...for myself, my children, and grandchildren.

So this is me , the real Jungle Mom ! I am the mother of four and the grandmother of three,  and a 40++++ yr. old woman just wanting to talk and have a good laugh, mostly at myself!

I miss them...

 Jungle Mom the absentee blogger

I miss  the interaction I used to have on this blog. These days, I am lucky to have time to jot something new down on a fairly regular basis. There was a day when I would be able to visit many blogs and leave comments. This in turn meant that those bloggers would visit and do likewise.

Since moving to Ciudad del Este and begining a new church plant, I have not been able to get around to all the blogs I used to read on a daily basis. Also, since we are working with people here, I do not feel at liberty to  write much about that or what we are doing in the ministry. I feel I should protect their privacy and I would not want them to think they are merely BLOG FODDER, so to speak. They are precious people that I enjoy interacting with and I am blessed to have them all in my life, but I wont be writing  anything about them except in a very general way.

Which brings me back to the title of this post... other bloggers and their comments, I miss them! And I miss some commenters who do not have their own blogs but used to regularly leave comments here at The Jungle Hut.

People like: Z, The Beak,   The Merry Widow, Papa Frank, Serendip, Speedy G, Big Girl Pants, and of course, all of my expat bloggers spread across the globe! I also miss the regular comments from people like Gringo who seems to get my sense of humor more than anyone else.

So, if you are out there reading this... how about a comment for old times sake? Or if you are a new reader, please introduce yourself!

Even feel free to ask a question about anything at all. Yes, anything at all, and I will do my best to give you an answer.

Proof of Life

This proof of life message is being allowed by the benevolent goodness of the government run phone company monopoly  which controls all internet access in the country I live in. We are alive and well. When the "independent" companies ... "fees"... are all paid we should be able to communicate again.

Torn between two lovers...

Feeling like a fool!

It's true. I am having a hard time choosing between two laptops!

You see, my old faithful laptop is over 5 years old. Its battery no longer works, which is inconvenient when one travels or even moves about the house, but even more problematic is that the screen is unhinged. (like me!) Not to mention it is terribly slow! TERRIBLY slow! (like me!)

But it has moved from Venezuela to the USA to Paraguay with me. We have been through a lot together and I feel disloyal even looking at another computer.

Except for this new little beauty!

Its light! Its very portable even on days when my arthritic hands and wrists can't manage much. And its very FAST! Amazingly fast! So I find myself drawn to it.

But then I feel guilty for ignoring my old faithful laptop.

Torn between two lovers.

Feeling like a fool.

Loving both of you is breaking all the rules!

The Things I see...

Virtual Friends

Recently I was able to meet up with two friends. We met each other through blogging. Kathy comments often and reisdes in Curacao but comes to Paraguay every year to visit family. Christie arrived in Paraguay about the same time that I did but lives a few hours away and we do not often see each other.

My husband refers to my online friends as my imaginary friends, well, we three amigas recently met each other for lunch at the mall here in Asuncion, which proves we are not imaginary friends at all, but rather,  friends  in deed!

Here we have the three little amigas enjoying a piece of America at Burger King!

Some answers

You asked...

Have you found good friends, for you personally? Being in ministry it must be hard always "putting yourself" out there. Sometimes you just need someone for yourself. I hope you have!

I think my daughters, Jackie and Jewel, were my closest friends , so I miss them both. Truthfully, knowing that I am leaving for Ciudad del Este in a matter of months has caused me to not get too attached to people here . This may not be healthy, but it is how I protect myself from the future loss of separation.

How soon after you met Clint did he ask you if you wanted to be a missionary? And how soon did he mention the deep jungle as opposed to just "regular" missionary work? Or did you mention being a missionary first??? Did both of you always want to be a missionary or was it something new to think about when the other one mentioned it? :)
I'm sure I'll think of more to ask soon! :)

I knew he was planning to train for the pastorate when we met while still in HS. He was a senor and I was...14. When we married, he planned to be a church planter in New England, but during his senor year, we decided to dedicate our lives to foreign mission work. I had no problem with this as I had always dreamed of being a missionary to an African tribe. As a child, I wrote stories about it.
We spent a year in Mexico and then 8 years in the city of Barquisimeto, Venezuela. We were constantly made aware of the needs of the tribes and saw that few were willing to go live among them, so we felt that we should get the training needed to go ourselves.
Part of this awareness came about by the fact that we raised two Ye'kwana children in our home while living in Barquisimeto. I do not mention them often or give their name as they both still live in Venezuela and I do not want anything I say or do to be used against them.

I always wanted to know what Bible college you and hubby what to?

My husband attended Baptist Bible College and then transferred to Northeastern Baptist Bible School as he felt we would be living in New England after graduation anyway. That school has since merged with another and no longer exists. I began attending a small school in Florida and then after our marriage I also attended NBBS.

Name the 5 places on Earth you would like to visit for the first time & why.

Israel~ The history!
Rome ~ The history!
Egypt~ To see the great pyramids.
Machu Pichu, Peru~ To view the handiwork of the Incas!
Easter Island~ It fascinates me to see things for which we have no real explanation.

Would you prefer that the people & communities you work with have less or more contact with "the outside world"?

I loved working with the Ye'kwana people and I enjoy the lifestyle of a small community where everyone knows everyone. It is very fulfilling to be able to help a remote people who truly need your assistance. On the other hand, it is physically very hard to live and serve in such a way.

If you, JMom, had an audience with Hugo Chavez, and you were absolutely sure that he would listen to you therein,

What would you say to Hugo?

I hope I would be able to show christian compassion and share the gospel message with him. I would hope he would accept it and change his behavior.
I would truly wish to know if the rumors of his conversion to Islam are true. His behavior and choices of alliances seem to confirm this as a fact. He has the right to believe as he wishes, but why not acknowledge it?
I would also love to ask him about his many well documented lies, some of which he was repeating just last night on Larry King Live.
I would like to know why he hid under his desk when captured if he is such the brave warrior he claims to be.
I would like to know why he preaches socialism for all and yet his family has become so wealthy and live in open luxury.
I would like to know why he claims to hate America and everything it stands for and yet continues to sell oil to the USA. How can he morally do that?
I would really like to know why he would think the people of Venezuela would want to listen to his rants broadcasted on all medias, by law, for hours and hours at a time!!!!!

Hi Rita,

My question is on my blog - today's date. I asked it there instead of here because I would like to hear some others also give input.

All the best,
GB

I gave my answer to his thoughtful question on his blog. Glenn and I do not always agree but he has always treated me as a gentleman and a friend.

I am going to save the rest of these for next week and answer each one as a complete post, so watch for them!

I'm not really here

That's right, I am scheduling this to post while I am away from home. We are helping in a Camp for the church kids. This is our winter break here in Paraguay, so schools are out. While I am away for the next few days, I have a request for all my readers.

It has been suggested that in order to promote my book and use this blog as a platform, I should post a few of my most popular posts in my side bar. This would allow all new readers a rapid way in which to get a glimpse of what the book will be.

I have gone back through my posts and according to my site meter, the following are some of the most popular posts here at The Jungle Hut. I ask that each of you take the time to read them over in my absence and let me know if you think these give a balanced look into what I am all about. Perhaps you may remember another post which was a favorite for you, if so, let me know which one and why.

I look forward to your input!

Did you miss me?

I have been with out internet since Saturday afternoon. Why? It's a long story, but a volcano in southern Chile spewed forth a 4000 meter high column of ashes and cinders, and it caused my antenna here in Paraguay to get blown out of position. Some say it was not caused by this, but...you kind of had to be here!!!

It was a bright sunny day with temperatures in the high 90*'s and then, in mid afternoon, the sky darkened to the point that the street lights came on. The temperature dropped to below 70*. The air tasted of fire and smoke. We had an incredible wind storm which dumped the ash onto us here.

The rain and heavy winds helped to clear the air, but everything was covered with ash and the rain left black spots on everything. My laundry on the line was covered with spots! The wind managed to blow the ash into every nook and cranny and filled my house with a fine layer of gray ash!

And all of this caused my antenna, which receives my internet, to be blown out of position. Since it is now Holy Week here, it took until this afternoon to get it adjusted correctly. The antenna is 75 feet tall, or I may have attempted it myself !

So...where do you think I am ????

Facebook

Ok, after much delay, I took the plunge and opened a Facebook account.

I was reluctant to do this because, I spend too much time on line already! I did not even mean to start this blog. It was started by accident while attempting to leave a comment on my daughter's blog. The next thing I know, I had created a blog.

Then, out of no where, people came to read my posts. This made me feel obligated to write something for them to read. Slowly, my readership grew to around 200 a day and I now feel that I must try and write something every day.

It is like having a baby to feed and care for. It takes up time but is also very rewarding. Having to be in comment moderation requires me to check the comments several times a day, which is a bit like changing my bloggy baby's diaper!

Blogging has given me an outlet for writing my jungle stories, sharing my political thoughts, and just having a good time with people from all over the world. But it is much more than I had ever anticipated...so I was avoiding the whole Facebook thing, not wanting to get sucked into another internet vortex!

Today my daughter made me do it! I am now on Facebook and some of my non blogging friends are happy to find me there. I am not sure what to do with it yet...

So what about you, are you on Facebook?

Trick or Treat

I wanted to find a picture I had posted awhile ago of a Yanomami witch doctor. I have so many photo files, I decided it would be faster to just google, 'photo of Yanomami witch doctor'.

I did! Guess whose picture was the third one across the top????

MINE! Yep, a picture of me and my kids holding a sloth.

I might be many things, but I am neither a Yanomami nor a witch doctor!

Hmmppphhh!....

Personal Update

The immigration process is going fairly smoothly, considering we are dealing with a South American country. One of the surprising things for us is that the 'processing fees' (bribes?) are so much less than dealing with Chavistas!

The other thing that is nice, is that we do not see Hugo's posters slathered on every office wall!

We have been cleared by Interpol and the Health Department. You will all be glad to know that we do not have aides or syphilis.

We now have to go around to our neighbors and have them sign an affidavit stating that we actual do reside at the address given as our home.

In the mean while, we have enjoyed getting to know the folks at church here. The girls are active in the teen group and a small group bible study. My husband was able to preach his first sermon as a missionary in Paraguay last Sunday, which was exciting! We enjoyed the service two weeks ago which was in celebration of Children's Day. It is a big deal here so the church service was geared towards the children. My son in law gave a bible lesson using story cards. We had puppets and after the service a carnival type atmosphere had been planned for the neighborhood children with games, prizes, snacks and clowns. It was a great way to bring in families! Here are a few pictures of some of the events.

Basketball!

Feed the pig!

Fishing hole!

And Jewel as a clown !
(She's the one with red hair!)

The people here are very friendly and humble, easy to get along with.

I made a major mistake by shipping our school books. We have only math and 9 weeks worth of other subjects in hand. Our shipment should arrive in port on the 7th.

The 7th of...never!

Oh well, there is a lot to study outside of books! I am preparing a small unit study on Paraguayan history and geography for the girls so that they are more familiar with the country.

I also was able to meet a Paraguayan blogger I have been following for over year a (Muna’s Blog)
as well as spend and evening with one of my favorite bloggers.(Brendas Blog)

And, some how, through it all, I totally forgot today was a holiday!

Can You See Me Now ???

I know a few of you were unable to access my blog yesterday. There seems to have been a couple of factors involved. Anyone using Internet Explorer was unable to gain access while those using Mozilla could do so. The problem seems to have something to do with my sitemeter, which I have removed.

At the same time, many blogs have been turned in to Blogger as "spam" and inappropriate. All of these blogs had anti- Obama content and are now under review for 'hateful content'???

I am tempted to go around the blogasphere and report any 'lefty' blogs as inappropriate, but that would be childish, but oh! SO! FUN!!!

I do miss my sitemeter though!

UPDATE! Sitemeter is said to have fixed the problem. I have reloaded it here and trust all is well.

Thanks for the feedback!

It seems that most of you think that I should stick with the title of my blog. So, at least for now, 'The Jungle Hut' will remain the same, as will, 'Jungle Mom'. I will perhaps add a subtitle and will update my side bar to reflect the changes in our lives.

I will also continue with just the one blog for now because I do not agree with the humanistic concept of dichotomy. God is not just a part of my life but He is my life and I can not segregate Him to only one aspect of my life. Part of what I would like to convey to my readers here is that living a life of service to God and sharing my faith with others is anything but boring.

I will continue with my US political rants on occasion because I do feel that our country is at a cross roads and I have a duty to warn and beseech my fellow citizens to be aware of the traps we have allowed ourselves to walk into! I have lived under socialism and a form of tyranny, I see the democratic candidate sounding an awful lot like Chavez in the early years. I will speak out. I am observing as a lot of younger Americans are acting upon the years of political correctness which they have been indoctrinated on in their education and I have a responsibility to point this out. I may not make a difference, but I will know I have tried. My main warning to these people is 'TANSTAAFL"!

There ain't no such thing as a free lunch! If you want the government to provide and do for you, prepare to surrender all your personal rights as that is always the cost of socialism and will continue to be so. It has all been tried before and history has proven it to be ineffective. And as for voting, I see people here doing just as the Venezuelans did when electing Chavez, voting for 'change' without a clear picture of what that actually meant.

In regards to Chavismo, I do not worry too much now that I am no longer in Venezuela. We used to have a lot of 'code' names and such to refer to him while living there. I remember referring to him as 'HHH' ( His Highness Hugo!) while posting from there. My chavista trolls have dropped off considerably since I left the country.

I had a few nasty trolls last summer who threatened me and my daughters, but the ones I am deleting now are merely annoying. I get some homosexual trolls attacking me which I find intriguing. I do not recall ever having posted about homosexuality here at all.

As to being anonymous online, I do not feel it is feasible for us as we have already been in newspapers, magazines and on several web sites since our problems in Venezuela. Sometimes I feel being transparent is in itself a bit of protection.

In regards to Islam, I do get angry commenters on occasion and suppose I am a bit sensitive to threats after all we went through in the jungle of Venezuela. Paraguay is a different place and I will not be in direct contact with Muslims for a few years at least and will need to re- evaluate at that time. In the mean time, I may do a bit of editing here of previous posts and will try to always report, with sources, anything I might say about Islam on this blog.

I feel great compassion for the individual Muslim but am appalled by the religion itself as it seems to promote terror and violence and has done so for centuries. That I can not deny.

Finally, my family does not want me to change anything here and feel that we are at a time in history when each of us must stand up and speak the truth even when it is inconvenient. I wonder where they got that attitude from???

One of the most interesting things in regards to this blog, for me at least, is the great variety of regular readers! I have mostly self proclaimed Christians reading, the majority being Baptist. This is expected. I have several other denominations represented here, I know of Methodists, Lutherans, Nazarene, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, as well as Mormons, and even Jehovah's Witness'. I suppose that is also understandable. Several Jews also read my blog. I presume they found me via my pro-Israel posts.

Among my regular readers I also count a Buddhist ! Even a few atheists and several agnostics. I even have a self proclaimed 'pagan'! I am often wondering what they find of interest here at my obviously Christian blog which expresses my Judeo-Christian world view, but I am glad to have them reading!

I get quite a few readers who are involved in survivalism and am curious what brought them to my blog...maybe the fact that I 'survived' the Amazon Jungle?

Again, thanks for your input! And if anyone would like to share with me how you came by my blog, and what is it that keeps you coming, now would be a good time to de-lurk!

Reader feedback needed

As many of you know, I will be moving to Paraguay in a couple of weeks. We will be starting over, a new country, a new ministry, a new life. This is causing me to wonder if I should perhaps change the name of my blog.

Maybe it is time for something other than 'The jungle Hut' and 'Jungle Mom' since I am no longer there? But, I have a small but loyal following here and 'Jungle Mom' is known in certain, very small, blogging circles. I would not want to lose those readers who are following me.

I have at times been criticized for having too strong of political views for a Christian missionary. I am thinking that perhaps I should have one blog for politics, under another name, and keep this blog for personal and mission related posts. This goes against my grain as I feel all of these facets are a projection of who I am, a complete person. I feel Christians should have as much right to express their political view points as any other citizen. but, I do not want to needlessly offend readers.

Another area I need to consider is limiting my commentary against Islam as I will be in an area with a Muslim population and would not want my children harmed or endangered. But again, I hate to give into these extremists!

So, what do you all think?

Admit it !

Sometimes blogging gets to be very intense! At times everything you see or hear is inspected for possible 'blogability'. You know who you are! Admit it ! You have thought about blogging on some pretty lame topics, considered blogging about down right embarrassing happenings...even the mundane can be a possible blog topic, if you have a picture to post with it! Right???

So, is this just me, or are you guilty on occasion as well ??? Or maybe you know someone who is like this!
Have you ever sat up in bed at night to jot down a thought you had about a possible post?

Stopped the car to take a picture of something for the express purpose of blogging about it?
Or worse, driven out of your way to take the picture?

Talked to someone on the phone for hours, someone you have never met, but knew all about them, via their blog?

You no longer fuss over inconveniences in life because now they are blogging material?

Been introduced by your screen name?

Had your husband referred to publicly as 'Jungle Mom's husband'?

Any of you care to share your blogging habits with us?
The first step is admitting it, right?

6 Quirky things

Wiens world has tagged me for a meme!
(She lives in Paraguay!)

Here are the rules of this meme:
1) Link to the person who tagged me.
2) Mention the rules.
3) Tell six quirky yet boring, unspectacular details about myself.
4) Tag 6 other blogger´s by linking to them.
5) Go to each person’s blog and leave a comment that lets them know they’ve been tagged.

Here goes!

1) I love sci-fi, especially Star Trek. I used to read the Star Trek novels over and over again, alas, they had to remain in the jungle upon our unplanned departure. We had a cousin who would video 'The Next Generation' series and send them out to the jungle for us. We would watch them using a battery powered TV/VCR. One night we were in a small tent and watched the video for 8 hours, until the 12 volt battery died!

2) I have to read something every night. When I go to bed, no matter how sleepy or exhausted, I must spend a few minutes with a book before I fall asleep. In the jungle, we all had small book battery lights to read by.

3) I must wear mascara and eyebrow powder EVERYDAY! No matter where I may be, or what else I must do without, these two items are not optional!!!

4)I prefer to read the Old Testament in Spanish and the New Testament in English! I have no idea why this is.

5) I can not stand repetitive noises! Pen clicking, finger drumming...AARRGGHH! My kids would do these things and bet each other on how long it would take for me to respond. ANNOYING!!!

6) I talk to myself ...a lot! But not as much as my daughter, Jackie! I think I started doing this when we were newly arrived in the jungle and trying to learn the language. I had no one else to talk to!

And now I get to tag 6 bloggers. I decided to introduce you to some of my ex-pat friends spread around the world. I find all their blogs to be very interesting and educational about life in the countries where they live.

Building 68 (Ukraine)
