The 'cute traditions', I think, should be readily accepted and seen by Christians as symbolic of the resurrection of Christ should they not? I have always believed, well at least as long as I can remember thinking about them, that Easter traditions such as the Easter Rabbit, and colorful baskets of flowers or colored eggs at Easter were all signs of rebirth, of a new coming, of a resurrection of the seasons. Easter, of course, is in the Spring. Along with the spring comes many wonderful things that are all indicative of not only birth but of rebirth. Spring comes after the harshest season - winter. Winter is a season, in most parts of the world, when things do not bear fruit, animals do not naturally give birth, animals do not mate, and in general creatures of all sorts (including men) do not thrive. It is also the season during which trees lose the last of their foliage and are, in essence, barren.

With the coming of Spring, all of this changes. Things such as trees, that appeared dead, are reborn. Fields go from being essentially bare to being full of new growth and flowers soon blossom where once only apparently dead grass had been; trees bear flowers and sprout leaves. Animals such as rabbits, which seem scarce in winter, are suddenly in abundance during the spring as mothers bear new young. This of course is not limited to the natural world, and the fields of men again can be planted, and soon begin to bear new growth, and the livestock of men - such as domestic fowl - again beginning to lay and bring forth young.

These 'cute traditions' are quite possibly, by divine design, as much a part of Easter as is the Resurrection. Now before someone calls me blasphemous or anything like that (which indeed I have been known to be since I am at best agnostic) let me ask you this: Did God plan the resurrection? Did God allow for it? Did God accomplish it? (You had better say yes if you truly believe that Jesus was god and it was he who resurrected). If the answer to al of these is yes, then what makes you think that God did not plan for mankind to symbolize resurrection with such things as rabbits and eggs and chicks and flowers since they too are all things that quite clearly are analogous to resurrection. If you think this not the case then why have not Christians symbolized Easter with something other than those things that symbolize birth and rebirth – say for instance Easter Rocks, or Easter Sand, or Easter Whatever. By sloughing off such traditions to get to the core of your spiritual belief, you may indeed be tossing aside some of the other most wonderful corporeal gifts that God has given you – perpetual resources for us while here on earth. And lest you believe that corporeal assets and resources are of little value when compared to the spiritual allow me to most respectfully remind you that you are flesh and blood and bone, and you are in essence what you eat; and most of all God created you to be such. Do not downplay the corporeal in favor of the spiritual since God, by your belief, created both and God valued it so much under Christian belief that the only sin that cannot be forgiven (at least under some forms of Christianity) is suicide. Yes indeed the flesh and blood of it all was very important to God, why else would he create us as such and then follow up by giving us his only son in the form of flesh and blood if such were not the case. The spiritual world may last for eternity, but the mortal lives we lead seem awfully precious to the God who created them as I understand Christianity and almost all other religious beliefs.

I hope you enjoy the most holy and happy Christian Holy Day of Easter, and that you fully celebrate the Resurrection, but that while doing so you don't forget those so called cute traditions - all symbols of resurrection and if you are a beleive, then all also created by a loving God.

All the best,
GB

Glenn,
Thanks for sharing. I have always said you are the kindest 'agnostic' I know.
I just hope that we do not get carried away by our traditions (and I have chocolate bunnies in my fridge right now) that we believers forget to contemplate the Resurrection.
So many of the traditions are celebrated as a cultural event more than a religious event.
I have been contemplating this a bit because where I now live, it is not Spring but Fall.
I trust you and your family are well and have a wonderful week end together. Is your son home for Spring break?

As long as we remember the TRUE meaning of this Glorious Pascha, as long as we accept the great gift of pardon that Jesus Christ bought and paid for through His suffering, death on the Cross and Resurrection, then I believe that God has enough of a sense of humor that He smiles gently upon us and our silly little traditions.

God bless you all and may you each have a very blessed and Christ filled Pascha.
