Jungle mom. I was at the demonstration with a few friends. When the police started dropping tear gas bombs I ran as far as I could and we were lucky enough to hide in a hotel for a while, then they drop tear gas bombs again from both sides, front and back, we didn't knew where to run. After a while we could finally run to a safe place and come back home. They attacked again after we left, Im so angry! But luckily, Im home now. You can't protest here. This is truly a dictatorship. My head hurts a lot, I think probably because of the gas.

Julia! Be Safe! I know you must protest, but do try and be careful!

The Metropolitan Police and demonstrators have had clashes as people congregate to protest the take over of RCTV. The protesters were peaceful and the police brought out the Ballena
( Water truck) and used tear gas. The protesters were forced to leave but have returned and began singing the Venezuelan National Anthem . I have seen the face off, nose to nose, of several protesters speaking to the police. At least 11 police are wounded.

You can watch video footage here!

8:45 Update: The police have once again used tear gas on a peaceful protest.

10:20 UPDATE: It appears that there are shooters in Prados del Este. Shooting at the metropolitan police. I am not condoning violence, but, I understand how they feel! When there is no longer any pacific way to protest or be heard.

12:oo UPDATE: It is done! the RCTV emblem is gone! Now we see the new television social emblem! TVes.

UPDATE: All media is warned not to refer to this as a closure of RCTV, but rather that their concession (liscense) has not been re-newed.

2:30 am: UPDATE: Another clash with the Metropolitan Police. You can see video footage of a peaceful protest with pot banging here.

Rita, we've been safe. This evening we didn't have church and neither did my parents in Caracas, as their attendance was low this morning. I've been watching Globovision and RCTV as much as I've been able to. Very sad...

Beth, Good to hear from you! Yes, very sad. Be safe! we have a road trip planned tomorrow..not sure it will happen!

Jungle Mom: How could those soldiers there, support Chevez, especially if his policies will hurt their own parents and families? Don't they care?

Rita Loca said...

Abouna, you have to realize these are mainly young men who have been "reared" on 8 years of this stuff. And they are scared to do anything against the regime as others who have are in jail,in exile,or otherwise dealt with.
the human rights violations here are not new and have been mostly unreported by the international media. All becuase they hate Bush!

I can't imagine what you must be going through. I will certainly continue to pray for you and all you love.
I'm so proud of you that you stay and continue with your mission. I'm afraid I would run and hide at the first sign of trouble.
God Bless

Oh Rita, what on earth will KEEP this man from doing everything that comes into his ugly head?!

Rita Loca said...

Beth, I think it is too late! They are saying that they are now using the rubber pellets.
I am so glad you guys are at home and not between cities!

How's the pot-banging going? I don't know why, but they don't do that around my house...Joe (Schag) said it was really loud over by his house and Mom said the same...

Rita Loca said...

It was pretty loud here. but up at the church...nada! the cars were honking their horns as well.

Well, it is/was not so peaceful apparently, which is a pity given all the positive credit that previous demonstrations had received. Easy come easy go?

Be safe all.

and here:

According to Globvision there were disparos on the PM after which they acted. 4 PMs in hospital, 7 with lighter injuries.

Rita Loca said...

I am watching Globo. I have heard that. I do not think they are above giving out false info.

I don't know. The earlier incidents are proven.

The latest I don't know. However, what I saw on Globo seemed credible to me.

But not necessarily what the Ficscal General is saying right now :D

La noche de los cuchillos largos Rita...

My husband and son were visiting granny and coming back home they passed right over Conatel. The police were using their guns from the highway down to the street in Las Mercedes neighborhood.

Of course they had to make an U Turn and drive home by not so normal streets.

I protested with the recorded "syren" at 10 pm. It's the only thing we can do, protest in a peacefull way (mas no servirá de nada)

Liz

Rita Loca said...

Liz, so it was the police shooting down into the crowd?
Take care! So goof to see you on line. I worry about everyone!! Stay in touch!
I was on my balcony banging away!!!

Liz said...

That's what my husband saw.. the police shooting down.. of course, he couldn't see if down there were people or not. He was driving, making sure our son was on the floor of the vehicle and shouting at some other drivers that were not as fast to make the U Turn.

I cannot sleep today.. I'll be checking the web every other minute.

Stay safe you too. If you protest, please turn out your lights. OK?

L

Rita Loca said...

Liz, I have been praying especially for all of my friends in Caracas, Thank God your family is OK!!I doubt we will sleep either. we are supposed to travel tomorrow...not sure about that now.
Good thinking about the lights!
We have a lot of police on motos driving around.

JM: You and your family and your dad have been in my prayers for a long time now. Tonight, I will pray much harder for your safety and strength. I will not be sleeping well tonight either. I'll check back with you tomorrow. Love,
Serendip

God keep you all. I will pray for you fervently tonight!

Rita Loca said...

serendip, thank you! I know you understand the feelings we are having.

Don't worry, I can't get out of my house, the highway near by its blocked, as far as I can see on Globo. I had enough for today, I'm still very scared so I wont go to another protest. I never thought I could feel this sad and hopeless. In one hour, RCTV closes and theres nothing left for us now. Hope people abroad can speak our what we can't.

The sad and appaling events in Venezuela have even reached us - courtesy of the BBC.

The dictator speaks and lawful authority must jump to his commmand.

As I said before Venezuela needs to be on the 'Radar' - before it is too late!!

My prayers and thoughts are with you all and above all - stay safe.
